A Thread Silhouette Is Not a Thread Gauge: Where Optical Inspection Fits

A threaded shaft can produce a beautifully sharp shadow while still leaving important acceptance questions unanswered. When we evaluate a Horizontal Instant Vision Measuring Machine for threaded components, we start by separating the dimensions visible in the image from the requirements that need another measurement or gauging method. That distinction makes optical inspection more useful, not less: it gives each result a clear purpose.

Our video introduces horizontal optical inspection. It does not certify every thread characteristic for every part. Likewise, the time and efficiency figures on product artwork depend on the selected task and comparison conditions; they are not a guarantee for a complete threaded-part inspection. We establish the required coverage with the actual drawing and samples.

Begin with the thread callout, not the outline tool

We first confirm whether the thread is external or internal, its form, nominal size and specified acceptance requirements. We also identify the manufacturing stage: a turned blank, a rolled thread before coating and a finished plated component are not interchangeable inspection conditions. A programme should describe what it checks at that stage instead of using one generic result called “thread size”.

A visible outside diameter is not the pitch diameter. Pitch is an axial spacing, while lead describes axial advance in one revolution; they differ for multiple-start threads. These distinctions matter when deciding which image features to select and how to label the result. We do not infer a complete thread specification merely because several repeated peaks are visible.

A projected boundary needs a defined viewing condition

The silhouette is a projection of a three-dimensional helical surface. Its interpretation depends on orientation, visibility and the optical arrangement. We check that the shaft is presented consistently, that supports do not hide the area of interest and that the selected boundary represents the intended characteristic. A sharp profile alone is not proof that its apparent flank angle can be read as the specified thread angle without considering the geometry.

For an Instant Vision Measuring Machine, we examine the edge points as well as the final number during qualification. Oil, chips and burrs can alter the visible boundary. We define preparation that is appropriate to the inspection stage and preserve genuine defects rather than treating every irregular point as disposable image noise.

Give pitch measurements explicit endpoints

For an optical pitch check, we define equivalent features on successive thread forms and measure their separation in the intended axial direction. The same convention must be used throughout the programme. Comparing a crest on one turn with an unrelated flank point on the next can create a repeatable but poorly defined result. We inspect the feature selection on representative parts, including normal surface variation.

Measuring a span across several intervals can support an average-pitch calculation when the endpoints and number of intervals are correctly defined. That average can also hide local variation. We therefore decide whether individual spacings, accumulated spacing or both are needed for the process question. We keep the endpoint definition and interval count in the programme documentation, not in an operator's memory.

An Automatic Video Measuring Machine may support a different acquisition strategy when a longer region or additional features must be inspected. The choice is driven by the required coverage and validated measurement method. We do not assume that every software configuration includes a dedicated thread-analysis module or every requested evaluation.

Keep the thread ends in the discussion

The start, runout and transition to a shoulder can matter just as much as the regular central thread. We identify these regions separately because incomplete forms should not be mixed indiscriminately into a central pitch calculation. At the same time, excluding them from that calculation does not mean excluding them from inspection. The drawing and manufacturing risk determine their checks.

Additional views do not automatically establish hidden internal geometry or functional engagement along the complete thread.

Pair optical findings with the right complementary check

Optical inspection can make changes in visible spacing, crest condition or runout easier to discuss with production. Complete acceptance may also require specified thread gauges, pitch-diameter measurement or other methods appropriate to the thread and contract. A passing optical outline is not permission to remove those requirements. We map each required characteristic to its agreed method and keep the results distinct.

For a suspicious local surface feature, a Video Measuring Machine with Metallographic System can be considered for closer examination where the part and configuration permit. Such an image may help investigate a damaged crest or surface mark, but it does not by itself establish material cause, subsurface condition or functional fit.

We also avoid a misleading comparison between unlike methods. If an optical value and a contact value disagree, we check their definitions, sampled locations and sensitivity to form before blaming either instrument. Agreement on one ideal sample does not demonstrate equivalence across the range of production variation.

Bring the difficult samples to the demonstration

We suggest including representative acceptable parts, known nonconforming examples where available, and components near the limits of the intended process.
