A Cpk Number Needs a Data Story: Preparing Optical Results for Capability Analysis

Subcategory: [Industry Updates] Time : 2026-10-09 Click : 631

A spreadsheet can produce a capability index before anyone has asked where its rows came from. When we demonstrate a Desktop Instant Vision Measuring Machine, we treat data collection as part of the inspection method, not merely a final export button. A large table of dimensions is useful only if the team can explain which process, feature and production conditions it represents. Otherwise, a convincing Cpk value may answer the wrong question.

The video demonstrates desktop instant measurement equipment. It is not a process capability study and does not establish a capability index for a customer process. Measurement speed and promotional efficiency comparisons depend on the part and workflow. The discussion below concerns preparing evidence for an appropriately designed analysis; it does not promise that faster measurement will make a manufacturing process capable.

Start by naming the process behind the rows

We ask the team to define the part revision, manufacturing operation and characteristic under review. A diameter after turning and the same nominal diameter after coating describe different process stages. Results should not be merged simply because the spreadsheet columns have the same name. The drawing requirement, unit and applicable specification limits belong with the dataset.

We also decide what one row represents. It might be one part, one location on a part or a repeat reading of an already measured feature. Ten repeat readings on one component are not ten independent components from production. Keeping part identifiers and repeat markers makes that distinction visible. With an Instant Vision Measuring Machine, collecting more readings is convenient, which makes this basic definition especially useful.

Preserve production order before making a histogram

A histogram removes the order in which values occurred. The same overall spread can conceal a change after a tool adjustment or a gradual shift across a run. We retain timestamps or production sequence alongside the measurements so the analyst can examine behaviour over time. Sampling should cover the conditions that the study is intended to represent rather than only a short, convenient interval.

Conventional capability interpretation requires a stable process and a suitable statistical model. Normal-distribution assumptions used by familiar Cp and Cpk methods should be assessed rather than accepted because software printed a number. If the process changes during the study, we investigate the change and define an appropriate analysis period. We do not delete inconvenient observations solely to improve the index.

For a Vertical and Horizontal Integrated Instant Vision Measuring Machine, one inspection cycle may produce several characteristics. Each characteristic needs its own specification and data interpretation. Combining side dimensions, heights and diameters into one pooled column does not create a meaningful capability measure. Feature identifiers should survive export even when the report presents several results on one page.

Keep the measurement method stable enough to interpret

A production trend and a measurement-method change can look similar in a table. We retain the programme revision and record relevant changes to illumination, feature selection, fixture or preparation. If a setting changes midway through collection, the analyst should be able to identify the affected records. A note added after the file has been separated from its source may arrive too late.

An Automatic Video Measuring Machine can repeat a released programme, but automation alone does not establish that the measurement process is adequate for the study. The team still needs evidence that the selected method resolves the characteristic with appropriate measurement performance. We review that evidence before treating observed variation as entirely attributable to manufacturing. This is a separate question from how quickly the machine can collect a batch.

Decide how exceptions will remain visible

Missing readings, manual interventions and repeated measurements need explicit handling. If an operator measures a part again after an unexpected result, we retain the original record and the reason for the repeat. Silently replacing the first value with a preferred value changes the dataset. The approved analysis plan should state which observations are used and why, while preserving an audit trail.

Results from a Manual Video Measuring Machine can contribute to a study when the method and sampling design support it. We identify the operator and method where those factors matter, rather than assuming that manual and automated results can be pooled without assessment. If two stations are used, we establish their comparability for the characteristic before combining data. A shared nominal resolution is not sufficient evidence of agreement.

Read the index with its supporting information

For a two-sided specification, Cp describes the specification width relative to the estimated process spread, while Cpk also reflects the mean position relative to the nearer limit. The estimate of variation, sampling design and analysis convention should be stated. We avoid treating a standalone index as a universal pass mark; customer requirements and the approved study method determine the applicable acceptance criteria.

Our preferred review package includes the source data, collection period, number of distinct parts, feature definition, specification limits and the analysis method. It also identifies exclusions and changes during collection. This allows a reviewer to ask whether the reported result describes the intended production process. Statistical uncertainty matters too: an estimate from a sample is not an exact permanent property of the line.

When choosing a Vision Measuring System, we therefore include a trial export in the demonstration. Can the team retain part identity, production order, units and feature names without manual reconstruction? Can an unexpected row be traced back to the original inspection? These practical questions connect equipment selection to the quality team’s analysis needs without confusing measurement throughput with process improvement.
