Left-Hand or Right-Hand Part? Keeping Mirror Variants Out of the Wrong Inspection Programme

Subcategory: [Industry Updates] Time : 2026-10-15 Click : 655

Two brackets can share the same overall length, hole diameters and external outline while belonging to different assemblies. If one is the mirror of the other, a plausible set of dimensions may still be attached to the wrong drawing. We treat variant identity as an explicit inspection requirement when planning a Vision Measuring System application. Finding a shape and measuring it successfully are not sufficient evidence that the system has selected the correct left-hand or right-hand component.

The video shows our vertical and horizontal measurement arrangement. It demonstrates access to different views, not a proven automatic mirror-part rejection function. Recognition behaviour depends on the installed software and the validated application. Likewise, the speed and efficiency statements on the product cover describe promotional test conditions and should not be read as a cycle-time commitment for this identification task.

Find the feature that actually separates the variants

We begin with the controlled drawings and identify an observable difference between the variants. A small off-centre hole, an asymmetric notch or a feature visible from a second direction may provide the distinction. Overall size alone often does not. We record the discriminating feature by drawing identifier and physical location, with a setup image showing which face is presented to the instrument.

A distinguishing feature must remain observable under the permitted loading conditions. If it is hidden against the support or outside the selected view, the inspection cannot rely on it. A Vertical and Horizontal Integrated Instant Vision Measuring Machine can offer different optical views, but the application still needs to demonstrate that the relevant feature is visible and sufficiently distinct in the chosen setup. We do not infer identity from a feature the instrument never observes.

Separate rotation from reflection

Turning a part on the stage changes its orientation. Reflecting a drawing changes its handedness. These are different operations, even when a symmetrical outline makes their images look similar. We ask which transformations the installed recognition function permits and whether that behaviour is appropriate for the product. Automatic alignment settings must be reviewed rather than accepted solely because the displayed outline matches.

For a Desktop Instant Vision Measuring Machine, free placement may be convenient, but convenience does not decide whether a flipped or mirrored presentation is acceptable. The approved loading instruction should distinguish in-plane rotation, turning the component over and loading the opposite variant. If the available view cannot separate two cases, we introduce another reliable identity check or restrict loading appropriately instead of claiming that software can resolve an invisible distinction.

Keep identity and dimensions as separate results

We define an identity decision before interpreting dimensional results. The record should show the expected part number, the confirmed variant and the programme revision. Where recognition is uncertain or the wrong variant is found, the response must remain distinguishable from a completed inspection. A set of green dimensional results must not override an unresolved identity check.

The same principle applies when a programme measures repeated holes. Feature names should refer to the drawing, not simply to the order in which the camera found them. We compare annotated images with report labels so that left and right features cannot exchange identities while producing plausible values. On an Automatic Video Measuring Machine, a repeatable travel sequence can still repeat the wrong feature association if the programme was defined incorrectly.

Challenge the application with known alternatives

Before release, we prepare approved examples of the correct variant, the opposite variant and the permitted orientations. These are planned validation cases, not production claims or invented customer results. We state the expected response for each case before running it. If identification is automatic, we observe its actual decision and any confidence or failure information that the installed system provides.

We also include an ambiguous or obscured identity feature where this can be tested safely without changing the part or equipment improperly. The intended response may be to stop and request review. It should not silently select whichever programme gives a passing result. We retain the observed outcomes, programme version and setup conditions. A successful demonstration on one pair of variants does not validate every similar product family.

Connect the report to the physical item

For batch inspection, each report needs a reliable link to the item that produced it. Tray position can support this only while the mapping remains controlled; reloading or rearranging parts can break that relationship. Where the application uses barcode or operator confirmation, we verify the complete association from the physical identifier to the selected programme and exported report. The presence of a scanner alone does not establish that connection.

An Instant Vision Measuring Machine may process several items in a field. We specify whether mixed variants are allowed and validate the required association behaviour. If mixed loading is unsupported, the work instruction should make that restriction clear. Ambiguous pieces remain identifiable as exceptions, rather than disappearing from the batch count or receiving a neighbouring item's result.

We finish with a release record covering the approved variants, observable identity cues, permitted orientations and the response to a mismatch. At DONGGUAN CITY HANDING OPTICAL INSTRUMENT CO., LTD., we can review drawings and sample parts to discuss an Optical Measuring System suited to the required views and workflow. Contact handing3d@163.com to arrange an application discussion that includes part identity alongside dimensional inspection.
